The 2nd Annual "Dancing for the Arts" gala,
to benefit the
Center for the Arts,
held on
November 21 at the Residents' Club at
Bulle
Rock,
was an overwhelming success and a
great night out for the nearly 300 guests in
attendance. The theme for the event was
"IMAGINE Your Center for the Arts
in Harford County!" The evening
included an auction, open bar,
dinner by
Laurrapin Grille,
and
exhibits of artwork by notable
local artists, students from the
John Carroll School, Edgewood
Elementary School, The Highland
School, Exploration Art School,
Conversation,
and
Warped Weavers,
as well as on-site demonstrations by local
artists. Performances by the Harford Youth
Chamber Orchestra, Harford Ballet Company
and Dance Conservatory of Music, poet
Larry O'Neal, and the
Harford Community
College
Jazz Ensemble added to the ambiance
of the evening.
The gala raised $99,630 for the
Center for
the Arts,
through tickets, the auction and
"Dancing Dollars" purchased by the guests to
vote for their favorite "Star" dancers in the
Top Fundraiser competition. Emcee for the
evening was Wyatt Everhart form
ABC News
(the station carries the popular "Dancing with
the Stars" program the inspiration for
Harford County's Dancing for the Arts.)
Judging the dancers were the Honorable
Angela Eaves, Circuit Court for
Harford County; Tony Meoli,
A&T
Properties;
Deborah Pro-Marshall, a
dancer and General Manager of
North
East Racing and Sports Club;
and
Mark Welsh, of
BB&T Mortgage.
Rick Dempsey, MASN analyst, Orioles
Hall of Famer and 1983 MVP, danced
the west coast swing with Debbie
Howley, co-owner of
Dancing With Friends.
Instructors from
Dancing With Friends
had
rehearsed with the "stars" in the months prior
to the event to perfect their techniques and
the coaching paid off with some dazzling
and entertaining performances. Betsy
Campion, president of
Campion Insurance,
Inc., performed the cha cha with Tony
Novak; Wini Roche, Harford County
