Dolce's Desk
Guest Column
Simon Says
Who knew I'd get to write a second
Guest Column?!
Harford's Heart
helped sponsor Dancing for the
Arts the annual fundraiser for
the Center for the Arts and
Dolce has let me talk about the
success of the event. It was a great night, attended by
hundreds of supporters, and raised over $120,000 to help
sustain the Center for the Arts as they move forward to
build a regional Center. The location for the Center will
be announced soon, and we'll all be able to drive by the
site and "Imagine" the unlimited possibilities.
Dr. Hugo
Benalcazar, MD,
FACS, won the
"Judges' Choice
Award", dancing
the samba with
professional
dancer Shara
Rzepnicki of
Dancing with
Friends. The top
fundraiser was
Dr. Mary Teddy
Wray, garnering
$12,958 from
fans of her
cha-cha. Craig
Ward's `Puttin'
On the Ritz'
quickstep was
the second top
fundraiser, bringing in $12,177, while Jim Butcher, waltzing
as Santa, raised $8,446. Other highlights included Bill
Vanden Eynden dancing the East Coast Swing, Paige Boyle
dancing the paso doble, Betty Pearce dancing the rumba,
and Monica Worrell in full leathers, flaming red wig, and
a "Born to Ride" tattoo, dancing the West Coast Swing.
In addition to the dancing competition, the evening
included sumptuous food by Simply Elegant, live music, an
open bar and a silent auction that also contributed to the
monies raised. And of course the guests had an opportunity
to mingle, see and be seen, and show their support for
development of the Center for the Arts. All the "stars"
said that rehearsal for their performance was "the hardest
thing" they'd ever done and they all said they'd do it again!
Getting out on that dance floor gave them a connection
with the community, and a fun way to promote creativity
and the arts in Harford County.
Plans have already begun for next year's Gala, to be held
on September 24, 2011. Contact Lyndi Richards, Director
