love interview continued on page 38
The Summer 2009 issue of
Harford's Heart featured Summer
Breezes on the cover, as well as an Interview with the Artist,
Barbara Love. Barbara's work, on display at
FastFrame Bel Air
(1431 Rockspring Road), has attracted a great deal of attention
from our readers as well as from visitors to the store. We caught
up with her recently to learn about her most recent works.
In addition to work on my series of oil painting of vernacular homes
in Harford County, as well as commissions for portraits, I had a
marvelous opportunity this summer to spend 10 days in Avignon,
in southeastern France. My pastel instructor along with 3 former
students rented Chateau Romanin, near the town of St.Remy.
Tell us about your
recent adventure
in France. This
wasn't your first
trip, was it?
Oh no! I made my
first trip to Europe
when I was 28.
Thanks to my
husband's job, we've
been able to travel
several times a year.
I've always been
in love with the
countryside in
France and with the
paintings of Arles
by Van Gogh. The
fields of flowers are
beautiful there's
so much to look at
and to see in a
different way.
Were you able
to complete a
large number of
paintings?
We painted every day! Either from the
balcony or the patio of the Chateau, or
on small trips to the village.
We had a marvelous
view of the Alpilles
from the Chateau.
Also, we were
fortunate to be
there for the annual
procession of sheep
through the village
from their winter
pastures to the
summer pastures.
Was most of your
work outdoors?
Yes! I love plein air
painting it's a
challenge to catch
the effects of the
light and we were
able to focus on alla
prima painting.
That's where you
try to complete the
painting in a single
session, rather than
getting back to it.
And of course it was
wonderful to be with other artists. You can
get such inspiration from the work of others.
