Turtles. And Reptiles.
And Snakes OH MY!!
The weather has warmed. Spring Peepers are
peeping. Snakes are slithering.
Turtles are sunbathing. Our
cold-blooded neighbors
have awakened from
their annual winter
slumber and now your
help is needed to find
them for the Harford
County survey portion of
the
Maryland Amphibian and
Reptile Atlas (MARA) project.
MARA is a five-year (2010-2014) project
designed and conducted by the
Maryland
Department of Natural Resources and Natural
History Society
of Maryland to
document and map
the distribution of
all amphibian
and reptile species
statewide. It's like a
Census for reptiles
and amphibians!
This project relies
nearly exclusively on
volunteers to conduct
fieldwork and document
the roughly 95 species
of amphibians and
reptiles known to
occur in Maryland.
To complete this
effort, motivated and
enthusiastic volunteers
are needed to get out
into the field and start
looking for the frogs,
toads, salamanders,
snakes, and turtles that live throughout the
county. It's a great chance to get involved in
collecting data for an exciting and important
scientific project, while also participating in a
fun activity with environmental, educational,
and recreational opportunities.
