I was really flattered when
the folks at the
Fallston
Humane Society
contacted
me after they read the
Summer 2009 issue. They
told me that October has
been designed as Adopt-A-Dog Month by
the
American Humane Association
and as
Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month by the
American Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals
. I was shocked to find
out that more than 10 million pets are
turned over to shelters in this country
every year because their owners simply
can't take care of them.
What the people at the
Humane Society
didn't have to tell me was all the great
benefits humans get from adopting a dog.
We encourage people to exercise and we
make you laugh. We're great listeners, we
never judge, and we're always glad to see
you when you come home. That's that
"unconditional love" thing that we have
going for us.
Fortunately, lots of humans are able to
return that love by adopting a dog and
caring for it, taking daily walks, giving
treats, having lots of play time and even
going to the vet. Other ways that humans
show their love is with fancy collars,
sweaters and costumes for Halloween. Dog
owners put a lot of thought into naming
"their" dog, taking photos and even having
their dog's portrait painted. I was a bit
skeptical about having to sit still to have
my picture painted, but
Maria Knott
(who
paints pet portraits) explained that I didn't
have to sit still she can use a photo. She's
painted lots of dogs (cats, too) and really
captures the personality of the subject.
That's probably because she has a couple of
dogs of her own, as well as cats, ducks and
parrots, and she's sensitive to animals.
Even without a pet portrait on the wall,
adopting a dog will change your life for
the better! Personally, I can't imagine why
anyone wouldn't adopt a dog.
